What to consider when choosing a video production company

7 Feb 2025 How to

There can be lots of things to consider when it comes to choosing the best video production company for your business – so to help, we asked our clients to let us know which factors were the most important to them when it came to making the decision.

Video production takes both time and money, so it’s important to get that initial decision right! We’ve given you a guide to the 3 key factors which, according to our client base, are the most crucial to consider…

1. Price

An overwhelming majority of consumers were primarily concerned with price. This isn’t that surprising because, depending on the project, the agreed budget can be extremely variable.

Of course when choosing a video production company, you’ll want one that matches your budget and your expectations. And there seems to be a fair bit of variance in price across the video production industry, which can be largely attributed to the vast number of young enterprises that have emerged. These smaller companies are typically one man bands who aren’t massively experienced, but have a relatively low price point.

On the other end of the spectrum are the larger production houses, which have all of the overheads and lots of experience… but they usually come with the hefty price tag.

Then of course, there are the video teams in between (like us!).

The best advice is to shop around. Find a price point that you’re happy with, and don’t be afraid to haggle. Most creative companies are in a position to offer some leeway on prices, so get out there and ask to ensure you’re getting a project that works for your budget.

Of course, price isn’t always reflective of quality. You may be able to find a cheap video production company that produces extremely high quality videos (and of course, there are those that charge an arm and a leg and aren’t able to produce any good video content for you). Secondly, be realistic with your budget and your production expectations. Going cheap can cost!

2. Quality

After price, our clients told us that quality was the 2nd biggest factor when it came to deciding which video production company to choose. The portfolio section of a video company’s website is a good place to start when evaluating quality. This should provide an indication of the kind of production quality you can expect.

You’ll be able to see their previous clients and their previous work – and it’s worth just taking a step back and seeing if your company fits in. Has this production company created video for a brand like yours? Are they used to dealing with a brand of your size and reputation? Have they worked in your industry?

Portfolios are great, but quality of service is just as important! This is where social media comes in to play. Social media is a great place to find out those home truths. Head to their google reviews, head to their Facebook page, head to their Twitter feed and find out what their clients really think of them! A portfolio page will always be the crème de la crème of a company, but sometimes social media is where you’ll find the more authentic reflection of the quality of service!

3. Team

When choosing a video production team, it’s seriously a good idea to meet them. You know, face to face!

Video marketing, like all marketing, is personal. The company are going to have to know you and get along with you in order to achieve the best possible results. Meet up with different companies and see if you can meet the Camera Operators who’ll be there on the day. There would be nothing worse than agreeing to go with a company, only to find out their camera ops don’t gel with you, or (even worse if you’re shooting a testimonial video), make your client uncomfortable!

The personality of the video production team is crucial. From initial idea creation through to the delivery, you’ll want to be working with people you get on with; it’s as simple as that. Creating effective video is all about teamwork and communication – some people gel and some people don’t.

If you have problems communicating what you are trying to achieve or your vision for a film, then it’s likely to be a long and rough road of achieving nothing. Video production companies are filled with humans, so talk to them and figure out whether or not you’ll be able to understand and get along with each other in order to work efficiently.

So there you have it, 3 things to consider when choosing a video production company. Hopefully, you’ll find one that is a perfect match and create some incredible video marketing to help your business.
