What we look for in our employees

14 Oct 2021 Behind the Scenes

We’ve told you what to look for in a video production company… but what do we look for in our own employees?

Here’s what Sunjay, our Creative Director, had to say…

When Will and I started this company back in 2011, the truth is we had no idea where wanted to go! Two friends, borrowing my Dad’s camera, driving my mums Peugeot 206 with a flowery interior, and filming anything we could get our hands on.

Fast forward 10 years, and we’re now up to 9 team members, with two vacancies and a list of freelancers we use on a regular basis.

So what do we look for in each of our team members?

Well, it’s all centered around our values as a company, which are Adaptability, Creativity and Trust. That’s how we ACT. (Like it?).

Adaptability

Adaptability is crucial. We cut our teeth as an agency producing fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled car shows at tracks like Santa Pod, Silverstone and Castle Combe. There’s no second takes, no studio lights, and no margin for error. Adapt or die!

This manifests today in a culture of ‘getting the shot’; meaning we work as hard as we can to deliver for our clients. We’ll get the job done, and then some. It’s about being reliable when it counts. It’s about trust. Composure. Adapting to the situation around you and overcoming the obstacles.

Filming has lots of variables; things go wrong. Life has lots of variables; things go wrong. If you can’t think on your feet, then you’re not right for us.

Creativity

Creativity may sound like an obvious one… but this isn’t limited to our Creatives. We need our marketing teams to create creative campaigns. Our admin team to devise creative automation solutions. Our sales people to spot the creative opportunities.

Being creative is about pushing your thinking.

Trust

Finally, trust. We trust our team by giving them autonomy. We trust them to track their own hours, to get the job done, and to be transparent with us, and in return they trust us as employers. If you don’t have trust within the workplace, it’ll get pretty stressful.

This is a family. We won’t all get things right 100% of the time, but we trust that we always have each other’s back. I trust my team won’t let me down, and they trust that I’ll always deliver.

Trust also allows for conflict. Conflict leads to more creativity, and creativity feeds our business.

Passion

Finally, it’s not in our values, but one of the things we look for is passion. Passionate people are fun people. Passionate people make work fun and interesting; and without that, life gets dull.

Maybe we should turn ACT into PACT… who knows. Life is more than just work, but work does take up a lot of life. Having great people around you makes work a whole lot more productive and enjoyable.

I guess that’s the final bit. That’s all we wanted to do; build a company where people love their job as much as Will and I do. We’re still on that path, but I’m proud of the progress so far.

If the values above sound similar to your own, perhaps we’d work well together! Get in touch to find out how we can create some amazing marketing content for your brand.
